For anyone interested in my travels…
I wanted to travel around the world, but it was too expensive, and it's difficult to get to interesting places on a RTW ticket – Cancun and Central America, Morocco – try finding a ticket that includes that, without paying a fortune. So I broke the trip into two bits – Malaysia, Thailand Cambodia, and Australia, one way (limited by costs – I had planned to go to Sumatra, but I wanted to buy a motorbike when home, and the money ran out). And the other way – Cancun, Belize and Guatemala.
USA is very expensive – we went to Arizona for 3 weeks and stayed with relatives.
In Australia I have relatives – I went to Brisbane, traveled down to Eden on the train/bus, and back up to Brisbane. One highlight of Oz for me, was Grafton – for bat lovers – very big colony of Flying Foxes, fly up river in the evening, and you can see a huge swarm of bats in the distance, as they leave their roost.
Another place to stop, was Wingham bat sanctuary – you can see Grey Headed and Little Red flying foxes up close – all the time in SE Asia, I saw no bats – monkeys, and a few birds, but not much wildlife – and I stayed at a jungle lodge in Thailand, so you'd think there would be wildlife – some gibbons in the trees, leeches and giant tadpoles – a few big butterflies, frogs, giant squirrels, some big insectivore bats.
The beer in Thailand is very strong – 6% – there was a big concrete staircase up to this jungle lodge – I very nearly fell off, at the top.
Then from Brisbane, we went by car up to Rockhampton and back. When I arrived at Brisbane, from KL, there were parrots flying around the yard, and I saw a pale-headed Rosella, perched on a clothes line – they are like giant budgies – yellow and blue. Australia is so different to Asia, and worth a visit imo. – so many exotic birds. We also visited a big colony of little bent-wing bats, not far North of Brisbane. IMO, the barrier reef is overrated – I thought snorkeling in Malaysia was better – sharks and groupers.
If I had unlimited money, then I would have nipped over to NZ and hired a car, and explore the South Island – which I might do on the next trip, and maybe get Sumatra done as well. en-route.
One of the most underrated places imo is Cancun, Mexico and Belize. It took me 7 weeks to visit all the main Mayan sites in Central America – Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba, Uxmal, Kohunlich, Caracol in Belize, Tikal in Guatemala. There are a few sites that I haven't been to yet – Copan in Honduras, Lamanai in Belize – Palenque (too dangerous).
I took a taxi to Tulum, and we arrived at the beach – and so far, it is the most beautiful beach I've seen anywhere – bright blue-green water. I tried roughing it to begin, at Tulum – bought a hammock, and tied it to a post – it was windy at night and raining a bit. I gave up with that and walked up the beach, at night. I saw someone running towards me – and I ran the other way, and sought refuge with some locals, in a cabana – the next day, I booked a cabana.
Learning Spanish has been useful. Spain is too expensive for me, and boring. The birds of Central America are very exotic. The snorkeling at Cancun is also top-notch. Playa del Carmen is a budget paradise, down a bit from Cancun – beach parties all the time (getting too old these days).
Other places that I've been to – Morocco – needs a motorbike imo – the bus/trains are worse than India – overcrowded trains, stifling heat in the bus – wouldn't do that again. And I've been to India – Goa and Karnataka – 3 weeks package holiday.
NZ is a long way away from England – but it's cheap to fly there 1400 GBP with NZ Airways – in November. South America is too remote for me – like Spain, only a very long way South – I speak some Spanish, but it's seems like hard work. I would like to go back to Cancun.. NZ maybe.
