We are so excited to be sponsoring The Collective at M & D’s first seasonal market, taking place next weekend at their sprawling estate in Westerlo. Hosted and organized by our friends Mario Pollan and Daniel Buenos, with the help of upstate event designer Mary Elise Rees, the curated market will feature a small-scale selection of the region’s most talented makers and food purveyors set against the backdrop of English and Mediterranean-style gardens, 1940’s open barn, serene pond, and countless spots to sit and socialize while breathing the fresh mountain air. Wander the grounds with a glass of wine in hand while admiring one authentic vignette after another, effortlessly blending with the greenery and wide array of market goods.

We look forward to reconnecting with some of our favorite upstate vendors, such as Reliquary Studio, Greentree Home Candle, and Urn Your Keep while getting to know a few merchants we’ve had our eyes on, like Cordwood Handmade, Olsen Family Farm, and Hudson Valley BBQ Co. In addition to the market, there will be workshops scheduled throughout the weekend for those who enjoy trying their hand at a new skill and connecting further with makers on their process. Sign up for the macramé wall hanging workshop with designer Erin Di Fiore of Ohayo, learn the art of floral centerpiece arranging with farmer and designer Colie Collen of Flower Scout, or partake in an interactive food of Spain cooking class with master paella maker Daniel Buenos.

The market will be free and open to the public and held on Saturday, May 6th from 12pm – 7pm and Sunday, May 7th from 12pm – 6pm. If traveling a distance, be sure to scroll down for our list of local recommendations on where to eat, explore, and stay in the area.

Read on for a peek of the grounds and some of the talented vendors who will be setting up shop.

Hand-poured and finished in the town of Delhi, Greentree Home Candle creates a vast collection of sculptural candles using 100% pure North American beeswax and natural cotton wicks. From textured tapers to vintage bottle pillars to earthy jumbo pine cones, owner Jen Green’s candle line is one of our absolute favorites, distinctive for its rich color palette and unique designs inspired by the natural beauty of the Catskills.

We can’t wait to set our eyes on the newest pieces from Reliquary Studio, a local furniture company focused on creating beautifully handcrafted and purposefully designed objects and environments. Relocated in the summer of 2015 from Brooklyn’s Industry City to a solar powered farm in the Hudson Valley, designer Matt Hogan is a wealth of sustainable construction knowledge and possesses the techniques required to take on all kinds of custom projects, from gorgeous loft swings and bar tops to soft maple desks and floating vanities. His work is a constant source of inspiration, leaving us breathless every time.

Les Indiennes textiles are 100% preshrunk cotton, made entirely by hand using the ancient Indian art of kalamkari, an intricate block-printing method that is friendly to the environment. Founder Mary Mulcahy sells the fabric as quilts, pillow covers, tablecloths, and yardage, along with home accessories out of her elegant outlet shop in Hudson. The understated hues, slight imperfections, and pattern variations of each soft and broken-in cloth delights us to no end. It will be such a treat to browse her extraordinary collection outside in the breeze.

Born out of the desire to create timeless goods to meet the needs of every maker, Cordwood Handmade designer Lisa Heimerle specializes in producing sturdy tool rolls, aprons, saddle bags, and tote bags inspired by her upstate surroundings and hands-on lifestyle. Her materials, chosen for beauty, utility, form and function, include copper rivets, stone oiled cowhide leather, and waxed canvas sourced from Maine. We love her creative approach to design and attention paid to small details, like the clever Baguette Musette, a stylish carrying case perfect for transporting long loaves of bread to the next spring picnic.

We have heard so many wonderful things about Reed Street Bottle Shop, a laid-back wine and spirits store that opened last summer in the little village of Coxsackie. Former Brooklynites Susan Baldaserini and Shai Kessler filled a much-needed gap in Greene County for delicious and affordable small batch wines, spirits, and ciders that hail from independent and local producers. Offering weekly tastings and thoughtful bottle recommendations, their shop is quickly becoming a reliable destination for those looking to be exposed to a fantastic under-the-radar selection. They will be set up during the weekend offering wine tastings, so make sure to stop by and try a few of their top picks.

With over 25 years in the barbecue catering business, family-owned Hudson Valley BBQ Co. creates customized menus using locally sourced ingredients, open fire grilling, whole animal roasting, and made from scratch food, from pastas to sauces. Expect to see smoked items that may not be as commonplace as pulled pork, such as sous vide pork belly with pickled cucumbers, shoestring carrots, scallions, and smoked farro with ginger and cilantro, or perhaps grilled chicken skewers with their popular smoked cashew and roasted butternut squash hummus, artichokes, and pita. It is a sure bet that we will be trying everything on their menu.
